The Multi-Talented Queen: Saerom’s Journey from K-Pop to the Screen
If you have been keeping up with the vibrant world of K-pop, you definitely know fromis_9. Famous for their infectious summer anthems, synchronized choreography, and bright energy, the group has been a staple in the industry since their debut in 2018. But recently, it is the group's charismatic leader, Lee Saerom, who has been stealing the spotlight—and not just on the music show stage.
Saerom recently treated fans to some gorgeous summer selfies on her social media, celebrating her blooming career with the major Korean streaming platform, TVING. For international fans, this is more than just a cute update; it marks a significant milestone in Saerom’s transition into a versatile entertainer. Over the past couple of years, she has quietly but steadily been building a foundation to bridge the gap between being a beloved idol and a respected actress.
Decoding the "Acting-Dol" Phenomenon and the Power of TVING
In the Korean entertainment industry, the term "acting-dol" (acting + idol) is used to describe K-pop stars who successfully venture into acting. Historically, this transition was met with some skepticism by domestic audiences who questioned whether idols had the training for serious dramatic roles. However, superstars like Suzy, IU, and 2PM’s Lee Junho have completely shattered those stereotypes, proving that idols can carry major television dramas on their shoulders.
For Saerom, the path to acting has been paved with strategic moves. Since 2023, she has earned praise for her steady, engaging presence as a fixed MC (host) on various K-pop related television programs. Hosting a live or highly structured show requires incredible quick-wittedness, perfect diction, and a natural ability to connect with the camera—all skills that translate beautifully into acting. This hosting experience has served as the perfect launchpad for her latest ventures.
Her partnership with TVING is particularly exciting. For global fans who might not be familiar with the Korean media landscape, TVING is one of South Korea's premier domestic streaming services, owned by the entertainment giant CJ ENM. Think of it as Korea’s homegrown answer to Netflix. TVING is famous for producing highly creative, edgy, and boundary-pushing original content—such as the smash-hit dating show Transit Love (EXchange) and acclaimed dramas like Yumi's Cells and Death's Game. Landing a prominent role in a TVING project is a major badge of honor for any rising actor, signaling that the industry trusts their talent and marketability.
What This Means for Flovers and K-Drama Fans Alike
For "Flovers" (fromis_9’s dedicated fandom), seeing Saerom excel in solo promotions is incredibly rewarding. Since debuting through the survival show Idol School, Saerom has been the reliable anchor of her group. Balancing the intense schedule of leading a K-pop group while filming a drama is no small feat, yet Saerom manages to make it look effortless. Her recent summer updates showcase a glowing, confident artist who is clearly enjoying this busy chapter of her life.
This development also highlights a growing trend in the Hallyu wave: the versatility of the modern K-pop artist. Today's global fans do not just want to see their favorites sing and dance; they love following them across different mediums, whether it is variety shows, fashion weeks, or television series. Saerom’s venture into acting offers international viewers a fresh way to engage with her talent, potentially introducing fromis_9 to a broader audience of K-drama enthusiasts who may not have discovered their music yet.
As Saerom continues to expand her horizons, she joins a proud tradition of multitalented Korean stars who refuse to be put in a box. Whether she is leading her members on a music show stage or delivering emotional lines in front of a drama camera, Lee Saerom is proving that she has the range, the work ethic, and the star power to conquer both worlds. We cannot wait to see what she does next on TVING and beyond!
